Evidence-based Nursing Center of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine

发布日期:2019-02-26
  • Aims and Purposes

The purpose of our center is to combine traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) nursing with the evidence-based nursing (EBN) organically, so as to guide the nurses engaged in Chinese medicine to carry out the best evidence into clinical practice, and also to instruct them to promote traditional Chinese nursing through the dissemination of scientific evidence, to improve the clinical and scientific research level of TCM nursing in the world.

  • History and Development
  • Embryonic stage

The School of Nursing, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (BUCM) began to confront EBN from 2006, since then we entered into the embryonic stage of the development of evidence-based nursing. Since then, we started to introduce the evidence-based thinking into scientific research gradually.

  • Establishment stage

The EBN Center was established at December 2013 and evidence based thinking was introduced into scientific research gradually. Scientific research, teaching and talent training were roundly developed based on the direction of evidence-based nursing.

At first, English literature on Tai Chi exercise were analyzed by using Endnote and Refviz. Then, a systematic review of the randomized controlled trial of Tai Chi exercise improving the quality of life of breast cancer patients was published. Then a study protocol about a randomized controlled trial on the effect of Tai Chi to breast cancer patients’ quality of life was developed based on the former studies. Deeply, two qualitative researches to gain insight to elderly’ s real experience of long-term adherence to Tai Chi exercise and investigate post-operative breast cancer patients’ knowledge, attitude and practice of exercise were conducted. These explorations on Tai Chi helped us to apply the evidence-based thinking to our design of nursing scientific research.

With the establishment of the EBN Center, the EBN team was founded. Two teachers were selected to further PhD study on evidence-based medicine in 2012 and 2013. Teachers were selected and sent to participate in the international conferences on evidence-based practice and attend training programs on evidence-based medicine methodology, such as  Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), Evidence-Based Medicine Center  of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Evidence-Based Nursing Center of Fudan University, Evidence-Based Nursing Center of Peking University, Evidence-Based Medicine Center of West China Medical School, GRADE Center of Lanzhou University and Evidence-Based Medicine Center of Guangdong Province Chinese Medical Hospital and etc.

  • Evaluation and integration of evidence stage

Our center entered into the stage of evaluation and integration of evidencefrom2013 to 2014, applying the concept and method of EBN to integrate and evaluate evidence.

In 2015, our Center established two international collaborating centers, the Best Practice Guideline Research Center of Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario BPSO (Best Practice spotlight organization) and the Evidence-based Nursing Cooperation Centre of JBI(Joanna Briggs Institute).

  • Evidence implementation and standards or guidelines construction on TCM nursing stage

Our center entered into the stage of evidence implementation and standards or guidelines construction on TCM nursing since 2015.

Two prominent nursing problems, “Dysphagia of stroke patients” and “Catheter associated urinary tract infections”, were taken as the starting point. Post-stroke dysphagia identification and management and prevention of catheter related urinary tract infection had been successfully conducted in our evidence-based nursing implementation sites.

Soon after those two projects, we started other evidence implementation projects, like physical restraint management, health education for patients with enterostomy, prevention and management of perinea injury at vaginal delivery and etc. Through the utilization of best evidence into the clinical practice, great changes had been made in improving nursing quality.

At the same time, we constructed an evidence-based nursing protocol for high-risk diabetic foot prevention and management, and also analyzed the evidence basis for TCM nursing protocols implemented in TCM hospitals. These two projects introduced evidence-based concept into Chinese medical nursing and protocol development for combined Chinese medical nursing with western. These had great significance in promoting the scientificity and standardization of Chinese medical nursing.

  • Achievements

We have gained remarkable achievements since the center carried out the researches and practices related to evidence-based nursing:

  • Education

Evidence-based thinking and the best evidence were applied in our first, second classroom of undergraduate students and also graduate students salons. Two evidence-based medicine doctoral teachers and a group of teachers with high scientific research and practical ability were cultured.

Also, we have compiled or translated 5 evidence-based nursing textbooks, participated in the compilation of the first Evidence-Based Nursing textbook in China as one of the editors. We compiled the Evidence-Based Nursing graduate textbooks for the 12th five-year plan and 13th five-year plan published by People's Medical Publishing House as the associate editor and chief editor respectively, and translated the book Evidence-Based Nursingedited by American Scholar Sarah Jo Brown. And our center signed with Xuetang of Tsinghua University to produce evidence-based nursing MOOC.

  • Researches

Since 2012, more than 100 projects at different levels have been granted, in which 2 projects were internationally cooperated, 4 projects were supported by the nation, and 23 projects were financed by the Beijing municipality. The total funding are more than 4 million RMB. Among those projects, 4 projects were granted by the Beijing municipality and 8 projects were financed by the university related to evidence-based nursing with over 0.8 million RMB funding.

Since 2012, 80 pieces of evidence-based nursing relevant papers have been published in peer reviewed journals, including 10 papers in SCI journals and 40 papers in core journals in China. Meanwhile, 40 papers are collected in conference papers. In 2016, Chinese Nursing Management Journal and Chinese Journal of Modern Nursing opened special columns to introduce our evidence-based nursing research achievements. 6 evidence-based nursing papers were presented at the JBI international methodology seminar. Several evidence-based nursing master theses got winning prizes in the CMB Chinese Nursing Network Graduate Forum. One evidence-based nursing paper got the first prize in the annual paper competition of Chinese Nursing Management in 2016.

  • International cooperation, Conference and Training

Invited by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RANO), we participated in the compilation of the book Transforming Nursing through Knowledge and it will be published globally soon by Sigma Theta Tau Publisher. Besides, we have translated 8 best practice guidelines developed by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario until now.

Since 2012, we have held evidence-based nursing training programs for 7 times, and given presentations on evidence-based nursing in China for more than 50 times. In November 2017, our school of nursing as one of the four chairman units, initiated the national alliance on combined Chinese and western medical evidence-based nursing to promote the standardization and scientization of nursing practice.
